In the year 1907, with the blessings of the great saint, social reformer and philosopher Sree Narayana Guru , Sree Bhakti Samvardhini Yogam was established at Kannur for the purpose of elevating the social conditions of the backward community in the locality. The Yogam was entrusted with the work of enlightening the spiritual facet of human mankind through learned teaching of the sacred texts. In the year 1916, Sree Narayana Guru consecrated the third temple in North Malabar at Talap in Kannur and named it as the ‘Sree Sundareswara Temple’ as a sanatorium for the devotees with the great message of emancipation from injustice. The Guru entrusted Sree Bhakthi Samvardhini Yogam with the divine duties as well as the up-keep of the Temple.
The long years of dedicated service of veteran leaders encouraged the Yogam to step into the field of formal education in the year 1980 with the establishment of the Sree Narayana Vidya Mandir School shortly followed by the Sree Narayana Industrial Training Centre and the Sree Narayana working womens hostel , Talap, Kannur . The Engineering College for technical education is another foray into growth for the Yogam by establishing the Sree Narayana Guru College of Engineering and Technology in the year 2003. The modern facilities available for the College in the scenic landscape of Payyannur at Chalakkode Panchayath has shaped the lives of innumerable students. The intention of the Yogam is to provide a platform to the budding youth to get trained themselves in technical skill and thereby create a developed community. The state-of-the-art infrastructure attached to each of the five departments (ECE, CSE, EEE, CE&ME) at the College is at the disposal of the students to be used proficiently with the aid of esteemed teachers for a promised future.
